The recent Tam Airlines crash in Sao Paolo not withstanding, Brazil has a fairly decent safety record when it comes to plane crashes.

The following is a list of major airline crashes in Brazil.

1982: Vasp Boeing 727 crashes en route to Fortaleza from Rio de Janeiro. All 137 people on board are killed.

1989: Varig Boeing flight crashes while flying from São Paulo to Belém in the north of Brazil. Thirteen people are killed. After going off course, the crew find themselves over a remote part of the Amazon with nowhere to land, and finally crash after running out of fuel.

2006: Gol flight 1907 crashes over the Amazon after colliding in mid-air with an Embraer Legacy 600 airplane flown by an American crew largely believed to have been flying at the wrong altitude. One hundred fifty-four people die aboard the Gol flight, while the Legacy airplane is able to land safely despite the damage it sustained.

2007: TAM Airbus flight 3054 skids off the runway in São Paulo under rainy conditions and crashes into a nearby Tam warehouse. Investigations continue.
